British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.
The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages leading to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
