The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
