Our Top Record of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Number One Spot.

At first glance, this work may look more like an arduous scholarly examination rather than the latest popular music record from a musician who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global pop star. Split across four separate sections and sung in thirteen languages, we have a dizzying symphonic album investigating feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical transformation, often via the prism of various female saints. The end of a romance—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—is shot heavenward here, buoyed by the lush presence of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast list of collaborators. The pure daring alone renders the efforts of other artists look quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux succeeds in transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, and sole credit going to the artist. Although this is not her first project to fuse historical sounds and the present, the scale feel much greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. The element that really raises her fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of joy. Much like the iconic artist at her height, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she is breaking your heart apart, you still want to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

This exuberant energy shines brightly during a stirring Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls away, and we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a comment before a hilariously over-the-top string surge crashes in like comedic impact. The track then shifts into the frenetic single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with Lux is that you never exactly understand—or even wish to predict—what it will go next."

Nearly every song concludes in a totally different place than how it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work begins out moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth its jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Pop

A key balancing act of the album is navigating the line of radical innovation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that it has become her first work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed primarily in the English language builds on a refrain that feels to gather more and more infectious hooks as it spins skyward. That feat is repeated by another powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its inherent excess. It is an abundant source of hidden treasure that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While some major pop albums of the year felt like feasting on scraps, Lux is a lavish feast where the guests around the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flit from conversations about historical saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative visionary.
