Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding those documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
