Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
